Serbia to hold early parliamentary elections in December–press source

It appears that Serbia is in store for early parliamentary elections in December, with press leaks confirming that elections are planned, and the opposition also demanding that a vote comes into play.

An unnamed source deemed “close to the leadership of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) was cited by Serbia’s N1 news site as claiming that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic had made the decision to call early elections. On Sept. 5, the opposition also formally called for early elections.

Opposition parties in Serbia have gained strength since launching Serbia Against Violence protests in the wake of two mass shootings earlier this year. Following the shooting, Vucic initiated a successful gun amnesty program, but at times he has voiced weariness and not only did he step down from party leadership, he has more than once suggested that elections could be in the cards.

The N1 source reportedly added that municipal elections and national elections will not be held at the same time.
