Postal workers call end to strike, Serbian gov promises pay raises

Serbian postal workers have officially halted strikes, although strikes may resume should the government fail to fulfil demands by Dec. 1.

The Sloga Union officially announced that the strkes would be halted back on Nov. 22, but, as was reiterated in the wake of the agreement, the government is obliged to increase wages by 30 percent and end “discrimination” in hiring.

The wage increase, however, will take place over the next few months.

As noted in the agreement, workers will receive a payment scheduled for tomorrow, Nov. 25,, and salary increases will be implemented at a rate of 10 percent per month beginning in November.

The government also dealt with farm worker strikes, and it has long faced protests over gun violence, prior to the decision of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to dissolve Parliament and call snap elections scheduled for Dec. 17.
