While Hungary raised an uproar over recent moves by Bulgaria to tax Russian gas in transit to the West, Serbia was oddly quiet—and now Serbian officials have revealed a new interconnector pipeline between Sofia and Serbia’s Nis, which will in fact work to lessen dependence on Russian gas.
The new pipeline which runs 170 kilometers, was launched Dec. 11 and will be able to carry 1.8 bln cubic meters of gas. It will carry gas from as far as Azerbaijan or as close as Greece to Serbia.
Serbian Energy Minister Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic said the pipeline would be key not only for Serbia, but also for Central Europe.
According to Worldpipelines.com, the EU funded construction to the tune of EUR 49.6 mln, and Serbia also received financing of EUR 25 mln from the European Investment Bank.
